X Proven Strategies to Help You Score 740+ on GMAT

1. Test Structure and scoring algorithm

Knowing the test structure and scoring algorithm play a crucial role in preparing for the GMAT. Without a doubt, test aspirants should know about test structure, GMAT syllabus, question types and scoring algorithm.

Even Though the GMAT composite score (200 to 800 score) depends only on the Quantitative and Verbal scores, it is important to get a reasonable score in IR and AWA to get into top B-Schools. It is important that the aspirants take the GMAT practice test to understand the structure better. The official GMAC provides GMAT mock test free for practice.

2. Thorough with fundamentals

Students who are looking for high scores, certainly should not compromise with the Fundamentals. It’s more than just knowing the basics. Thorough understanding of the concepts matters.

For example, just knowing the formula for finding the average won’t help you to get a great score in GMAT, but a thorough understanding of Average will.

3. Practice materials

Instead of practicing 1000 random questions for the GMAT test, students would benefit more by working on 500 standardized questions with the perfect review. It is always better to add the GMAT Official Guide (usually known as GMAT OG) in your basket of materials. All the GMAT OG questions are retired actual GMAT questions. So, these questions help to get a clear understanding of GMAT questions.

Apart from the GMAT OG, GMAT Advanced practice questions (Only above medium and Hard questions), Quantitative review and Verbal review are best books for GMAT preparation. While preparing for GMAT from GMAT OG, test aspirants should do a detailed review instead of just solving and checking their answers.

4. Techniques and Strategies

Stay out of the crowd. To become the highest percentile scorer, you should not repeat the same an average student does. Make use of strategies that gets the answer in a smarter way. Use the elimination and get rid of obviously wrong answers. Use estimation on questions that consume more time. Find a smart reason to choose the answers in GMAT questions, which can be achieved by continuous practice and review.

5. Quant section is not a math test

Students should understand the fact that this is not a test for mathematicians, but for business students. So, the takeaway point is don’t try to solve all the questions under the quantitative section as a Mathematician, instead, you should think like a problem solver, logical thinker, and smarter person in a time-efficient manner.

6. Verbal section is not an English test

Similarly, Verbal is also not a test of the English language, especially in sentence correction don’t try to memorize too many grammar rules. It may backfire and may ruin the whole test. So, focus only on important rules like Subject-verb agreement, tenses, parallelism, etc.

7. Flexibility

Don’t just stick with one single approach for any problem. You should have an option to choose your method to answer the question. Even if one method makes you fail, immediately take another approach. Be flexible and consistent with your approach.

8. It’s good to give up at times

We don’t need to give a tough fight against all our enemies. The same law applies to GMAT. It will be good to give up sometimes, instead of spending your precious time on a single question. You can still score better without that question.

But ensure that you didn’t skip or guess on consecutive questions, which may reduce your chances of getting a perfect score.

9. Keep an eye on the timer

Even though you are allowed to hide your timer during the test, it is always better to face the timer. At the same time, it is not a good idea to calculate the remaining time after solving every question. As a smart way, you can think about time stampers after a certain number of questions. Please refer the table below,

10. Don’t panic

Don’t judge your score during the test. Because no one knows how the GMAT algorithm works exactly, except the GMAC itself. So, you may see some wonders at the end even if you’re not satisfied with your performance. You may have incorrectly answered only the experimental questions (Not considered for scoring) or you’re not penalized a few mistakes at the end and are not consecutively wrong.

So, don’t panic and ruin your current and upcoming sections on the test day.

Keeping the above tips in mind, certainly you can become the highest percentile scorer. All the very best for your preparation.
